  • What Makes It Uncommon
Oyster mushrooms' sweet, mild flavor and velvety texture make for delicious eating, whether raw or cooked. They're also the easiest and most forgiving variety to grow, especially on Howard Berk and Todd Pittard's Pittard'smushroom growing log.

    • The duo salvaged recently felled aspen and poplar trees, cut them into logs, and planted organic oyster mushroom spores inside.
    • All that's left to do is soak your log and keep it in a damp, cool, dark place.
    • Soon: fresh oyster mushroom heaven. Re-soak and harvest every six weeks or so for up to three years.
    • That's a lot of shrooms for stir-fries, stuffings, salads, and sauces.
    • Put a smile on the face of your favorite mushroom lover, gardener, or mad scientist.
    • Handmade in Georgia.

Fungi fact: Each log has different nutrient contents and can fruit at different rates. Initial fruiting can be as quick as six months, while some can take over a year.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

    Howard Berk and Todd Pittard

created by Howard Berk and Todd Pittard

    location

    Georgia

Howard Berk and Todd Pittard’s fungi love started years before they knew each other. It was certainly fated that they’d meet at the local farmer’s market, bond over their mutual passion, and start a shiitake and oyster mushroom company. The twosome salvage healthy, fresh-cut Sweetgum and Oak trees that are on their way to the chipper, and take the logs back to their Chamblee, Georgia shop. Once inoculated with organic mycelium, they’re aged on the farm, to help the fungus develop. Howard and Todd put a lot of love into each log, and the wood gives it back, producing premium, healthy, delicious mushrooms for two or three years. The duo sell them to local restaurants and the lucky public, and now, you can get their inoculated logs and start your own own mushroom garden. They hope you enjoy the fruits of their labor.

This gift for my boyfriend completely over-delivered. We weren't expecting for anything to sprout for months, or even years. But after he meticulously followed the instructions and placing the log in the bathroom (shower ledge to be precise) - mushrooms started sprouting almost immediately. The key is dark and slightly damp conditions if you're growing inside. Thanks, UC!

Such a unique and thoughtful gift. Totally worth it.

This is a very thoughtful and unique gift, my partner loved it so much. I love the products from this company, but I wish I didn't have to pay for shipping if I order over a certain price. #sweepstakes

I bought this as a holiday gift (December) for my partner and we waited until the spring to soak it and try to sprout it and nothing happened. We soaked it several times but no luck. Not sure if because we live in Colorado and its dry that impacted it as well

Not able to give a review, takes a while for the mushrooms to grow.

Bought one for me, and one for my aunt. My aunt owns a plant store and grows all kinds of plants and vegetables in soil, hydroponically, etc. She takes growing live things very seriously. We were so excited about these logs! We followed every instruction exactly. Nothing happened - no growth on either log, THREE YEARS later. :( If I could give zero starts I absolutely would, but the system requires me to give at least one.

Super excited to try but we got a younger plant and the instructions aren't specified for the age plant we have. Could you help please?

    Brittany

I bought this as a christmas gift for my husband. He followed the instructions and mushrooms never grew even two years after waiting.

I gave this as a Christmas gift to someone who has been curious about starting to grow mushrooms for some time. They were very enthusiastic upon receiving! It's too soon to say about the mushrooms themselves (I see folks had varying success) but the price was good for a trial so I don't even mind. One thing to know is that this is literally a log in a box! Not even a packing slip inside. I had to print out the product page and also the instructions so the person wasn't confused about why I was giving them a log. I'd recommend for the vendor to include something in the boxes.

My partner was so excited when he opened this gift. We both love mushrooms, and this is such a fun experience to experience them from the ground up! Multiple people in the room during the unwrapping are now also looking into buying a mushroom log. I highly recommend!
