    location

    France

As a child, François Morel was wandering in the woods one day when he saw a hunter using a bird call to attract his prey. The little boy was so shocked that he vowed to use the devices to speak with birds, not hunt them. Self-taught, he’s created calls for about sixty species, choosing shapes and wood types for their influence on the sound, as well as their beauty. It sometimes takes years to create a new one; as François says, “It requires listening, invention, and love.” An active member of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO France), François also works to protect the country's wild animals, and often travels to Africa to fight elephant poaching. He lives in the mountains of Drôme, where he creates bird calls with his daughter.
