What Makes It Uncommon
Winged Waterfall
Where do butterflies disappear to when blue skies suddenly turn gray? Most take shelter under woodpiles, tall grass, or tree branches, but this storm-seeking quintet cannot wait to get drenched. Maker Catherine Murphy hand-cast rain chain is composed of strategically placed copper creatures rather than interlocking links. With outstretched wings, each butterfly creates a path for rainwater, carrying a gently flowing cascade that is as lovely to watch as it is to hear. Handmade in Asheville, North Carolina.Made from
wire, copper sheet

Growing up in a military family, Catherine Murphy spent her childhood discovering natural beauty around the world. But whenever she creates a new piece, she imagines it living in her favorite place: "a fabulous garden," she says, adding that she's "amazed and inspired by life in the garden." Her nature-themed copper sculptures are made to enhance green spaces. It's the merging of her two loves that "feeds my soul and keeps me motivated," she says. If she ever gets stuck, she heads out into the nature around her North Carolina home. "My go-to spot is a bench by the river," she says. "Living in the mountains and working beside a river make for a wealth of inspiration."
